Hargreaves Lansdown Capital Gains Tax: how to report it in the UK
If you sell shares, funds and investment trusts in your Fund and Share Account (a GIA), those disposals are subject to UK Capital Gains Tax. Here is how to turn your Hargreaves Lansdown history into correct figures for Self Assessment.
Which Hargreaves Lansdown account is taxable?
Only your Fund and Share Account (a GIA) matters for Capital Gains Tax. Anything held in the Stocks & Shares ISA and the SIPP is sheltered: gains there are tax-free and don’t go on your return. So when you work out your CGT, use the taxable account and leave the sheltered wrappers out, other than watching your £20,000 ISA allowance.
Three steps
- 1
Export from Hargreaves Lansdown
Download your transaction history as a CSV from the account. Pooled reads it with the custom importer and pre-fills the mapping.
- 2
Import into Pooled
Drop the file into Pooled and pick the custom importer. It reads your file’s own headers and pre-fills the column mapping, so it is usually a review-and-confirm.
- 3
Read off your figures
Pooled rebuilds each Section 104 pool from your history, applies the same-day, 30-day and pooling rules, and shows SA108-shaped figures with the annual exempt amount applied and a full audit trail.
How HMRC taxes your Hargreaves Lansdown disposals
Each sale is matched under HMRC’s share-identification rules in order: same-day first, then the 30-day bed-and-breakfast rule, then the Section 104 pool. Purchase fees and stamp duty add to allowable cost. Try it on your own numbers in the free Section 104 calculator, or see the guide to choosing UK CGT software.
Questions
Do I pay Capital Gains Tax on my Hargreaves Lansdown ISA?
No. An ISA (and a SIPP) is sheltered from CGT, so gains inside the Stocks & Shares ISA and the SIPP are tax-free and are not reported. Only disposals in your Fund and Share Account (a GIA) count towards Capital Gains Tax.
Does Hargreaves Lansdown calculate or report my Capital Gains Tax?
No. UK brokers don’t compute your CGT or file it for you the way an employer handles PAYE. You are responsible for self-assessing gains on the taxable account, which is exactly what Pooled produces the figures for.
How do I get my Hargreaves Lansdown transactions into Pooled?
Export your transaction history as a CSV from the account. Pooled reads it with the custom importer and pre-fills the mapping. Then import it into Pooled; historic buys rebuild your pools so future disposals compute correctly.
Is my Hargreaves Lansdown data private?
Yes. Parsing runs in your browser and nothing is stored until you review and confirm. A missing valuation is flagged for you to fill, never guessed.
